Adequacy of Workshop Facilities for Upholstery and Interior Decoration Training in Oyo State

This study assesses the adequacy of workshop facilities for upholstery and interior decoration training in vocational institutions in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. Upholstery and interior decoration constitute growing trade areas within Nigerias vocational education system, driven by expanding real estate and hospitality markets. The quality of training in these trades is directly dependent on the availability and condition of workshop equipment, tools, and materials. A descriptive survey design is adopted, with 120 students and 25 instructors from six vocational training institutes in Ibadan, Ogbomoso, and Oyo local government areas. An observation checklist validated by upholstery industry professionals and a structured questionnaire are used as instruments. The checklist assesses equipment types, quantities, conditions, and workspace adequacy. Questionnaire data capture student and instructor satisfaction with facilities. Means, frequency distributions, and chi-square tests are used for analysis. Findings are expected to reveal significant deficiencies in foam cutting machinery, sewing equipment, fabric inventory, and spatial arrangements for large-scale upholstery projects. The study also examines the relationship between facility adequacy and student practical skill attainment. Recommendations include a facility benchmark standard for upholstery and interior decoration programmes, industry equipment donation initiatives, and a facilities maintenance fund at the institutional level. This study informs vocational training facility planning in Oyo State and contributes to quality improvement research in craft-based vocational education.
