Adoption and Impact of Precision Agriculture Technologies Among Commercial Farmers in Rivers State

Precision agriculture technologies, including GPS-guided equipment, soil sensors, drone surveillance, and variable rate input application, represent an advancing technological frontier for commercial farm management. In Rivers State, in Nigeria's South South geopolitical zone, a growing number of medium and large-scale commercial farms are experimenting with precision tools, creating an emerging evidence base for impact evaluation. This study analyses adoption patterns and quantifies the impact of precision agriculture technologies on farm performance among commercial farmers in Rivers State. Primary data were collected from a census of 60 commercial farms operating more than 20 hectares in the state, supplemented with case study interviews with eight early adopters. Adoption was classified across four technology categories, and a matched pair comparison design was used to evaluate yield, input cost, and profitability outcomes between adopters and comparable non-adopters. Results indicate that GPS-guided land levelling and drone-based crop monitoring were the most widely adopted technologies, present on 38 and 22 percent of surveyed farms respectively. Adopters of GPS land levelling recorded irrigation water savings of 26 percent and yield increases of 19 percent in paddy rice relative to matched non-adopters. Profitability was significantly higher among multi-technology adopters. Constraints to adoption include high upfront equipment costs, absence of trained maintenance technicians within the state, and limited connectivity for cloud-based precision platforms. The study recommends the development of shared precision agriculture service models and establishment of a Rivers State precision agriculture demonstration centre to reduce first-mover adoption barriers.
