An Analysis of Error Patterns in French Oral Examinations at WAEC: A Study of Transcripts from Oyo State

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination oral French component assesses learner communicative competence in a standardised testing format whose error patterns and marking consistency across Oyo State examination centres have not been subjected to systematic analysis. This study analyses error patterns in French oral examination transcripts from West African Examinations Council oral French tests administered across twenty examination centres in Oyo State over three consecutive examination years. A corpus of 240 transcribed oral examination performances, sampled from WAEC oral examination records with institutional permission, was subjected to error analysis. Errors were classified by linguistic category (phonological, morphosyntactic, lexical, and discourse level), frequency, and severity, with cross-tabulation against examination centre and year of examination. Results reveal that phonological errors, particularly vowel quality and consonant voicing, constituted the most frequent error category, accounting for 43% of identified errors, followed by morphosyntactic errors in verb conjugation and gender agreement. Examination centres in urban Ibadan showed significantly lower phonological error frequencies, attributed to higher proportions of students from schools with audio resources. Marking consistency analysis, conducted by comparing examiner ratings across parallel transcript samples, revealed moderate inter-rater reliability, suggesting the need for enhanced examiner calibration training. The study recommends a phonological focus in the final year of secondary French instruction and an WAEC examiner calibration programme for Oyo State oral French examiners.
