An Analysis of the Financing Structure of Small and Medium Enterprises in Kaduna State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Access to appropriate financing is consistently identified as one of the most significant constraints facing small and medium enterprises in Nigeria, with implications for business growth, employment creation, and economic diversification. This study analyses the financing structures of small and medium enterprises in Kaduna State, located in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone, focusing on the mix of equity, debt, trade credit, and informal financing sources. Primary data are gathered through structured questionnaires administered to 220 entrepreneurs and enterprise managers across the Kaduna metropolis, Zaria, and Kafanchan, representing diverse sectors including agro-processing, garments, and light manufacturing. The data are analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple regression to identify the determinants of financing choice. The theoretical basis draws on pecking order theory, the trade-off theory of capital structure, and the small firm finance literature that specifically addresses informational barriers in developing economies. The study situates its analysis within the Bank of Industry's lending facilities and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria's recent institutional support programmes. Existing literature confirms that Nigerian small and medium enterprises disproportionately rely on personal savings and family loans due to collateral constraints and documentation requirements that exclude them from formal bank credit. Findings are intended to provide actionable insights for the Bank of Industry, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, and Kaduna State's investment promotion agency.
