An Analytical Study of Hausa Tonal Phonology and Its Implications for Orthographic Standardisation

Hausa is a tone language in which lexical and grammatical distinctions are encoded through systematic differences in pitch, creating both descriptive linguistic complexity and practical challenges for orthographic standardisation, particularly in digital communication contexts where tonal diacritics are frequently omitted. This study conducts an analytical investigation of Hausa tonal phonology, examining the functional load of tonal contrasts, their interaction with segmental phonology, and implications for orthographic standardisation efforts. A descriptive and experimental linguistic design was employed, drawing on a corpus of 2,000 naturally occurring Hausa utterances from conversational, broadcast, and literary sources, supplemented by controlled minimal pair experiments with 60 native Hausa speakers from three regional varieties. Tonal contrast density was computed across grammatical categories, and tone sandhi patterns were systematically documented. Reader comprehension experiments assessed the impact of tonal marking omission on reading accuracy and speed in both trained and untrained readers. Findings reveal that tonal marking is functionally critical for disambiguation in approximately 35 percent of tested contexts, with nominal and verbal distinctions showing the highest functional load of tonal contrasts. Untrained readers show significantly higher comprehension errors when reading toneless orthographic text, particularly in ambiguous grammatical contexts. The study analyses the gap between orthographic standards and actual digital writing practice, where tonal marking is almost universally omitted. Recommendations address development of a Hausa digital keyboard with accessible tonal diacritic input and curriculum-integrated tonal orthography instruction in schools.
