An Appraisal of the National Troupe of Nigeria’s Role in Promoting Indigenous Performing Arts

This study appraises the role of the National Troupe of Nigeria in promoting indigenous performing arts, including music, dance, and drama, across Nigeria's geopolitical zones. Established as a federal cultural institution, the National Troupe is mandated to preserve and project Nigeria's diverse cultural heritage through regular performances, outreach programmes, and participation in international cultural events. However, the effectiveness of the institution in fulfilling its mandate remains inadequately assessed in academic literature, particularly regarding its reach across regions beyond the South West. This research employs a descriptive institutional evaluation design, drawing data from structured interviews with National Troupe management, performers, and cultural administrators. Document analysis of programme reports, national tour schedules, and Ministry of Information and Culture policy documents from 2020 to 2025 supplements qualitative data. The study assesses the geographic spread of activities, the diversity of indigenous musical and performance traditions represented in its repertoire, and audience feedback from selected performance venues in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, and Enugu. Findings will evaluate institutional strengths and gaps in mandate delivery and propose recommendations for enhanced effectiveness in serving all regions.
