An Assessment of Fine Arts Curriculum Implementation in Secondary Schools in Kaduna State

The secondary school fine arts curriculum in Nigeria is designed to nurture creative skills, cultural appreciation, and aesthetic sensibility among adolescent students, yet its implementation across different states is highly uneven due to variations in teacher quality, material resources, and institutional priority. This study assesses the implementation of the fine arts curriculum in selected secondary schools in Kaduna State, located in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone. A descriptive survey design is employed, with data gathered from 25 fine arts teachers and 200 senior secondary students across ten schools in Kaduna, Kafanchan, and Birnin Gwari. The study evaluates curriculum content coverage, availability of art materials and studio space, frequency of practical studio sessions, examination performance trends, and teacher qualification levels. Data are analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to identify relationships between resource availability and curriculum implementation quality. The theoretical framework draws on curriculum implementation theory, art education scholarship, and the educational resource allocation literature. The study situates its analysis within the Federal Government's 9-3-4 education system and the West African Senior School Certificate requirements for fine arts. Existing literature from Nigerian art education identifies inadequate studio facilities, untrained teachers, and low social prestige for the arts as common barriers to curriculum implementation across the country. Findings are expected to benefit the Kaduna State Ministry of Education, the West African Examinations Council, and teacher education programmes in the arts.
