An Empirical Study of Microservices Architecture Adoption in Nigerian Financial Technology Companies

Microservices architecture has emerged as a dominant paradigm for scalable software systems, yet adoption patterns, challenges, and outcomes within Nigerian fintech companies have not been empirically characterised. This study investigates microservices adoption in Nigerian financial technology companies, examining architectural migration journeys, operational outcomes, and organisational prerequisites. Data was collected through in-depth case studies at four fintech companies in Lagos, including two payments processors, one digital lending platform, and one insurtech firm. Case data comprises 28 engineering interviews, architectural documentation review, and system performance benchmarking across three years of operational data. Findings show that all four firms migrated from monolithic to microservices architectures between 2021 and 2024, driven primarily by scalability demands during transaction volume spikes and regulatory requirements for service isolation. Migration challenges include distributed system debugging complexity, inter-service communication latency, and the organisational difficulty of enforcing domain-driven design boundaries. Quantitative analysis of post-migration performance data shows a median 47 percent improvement in system uptime and a 62 percent increase in deployment frequency.
