An Interdisciplinary Investigation of Yoruba Proverb Knowledge as Social Capital in Kogi State Communities

Proverb knowledge in Yoruba culture functions as a form of social capital that confers status, authority, and communicative competence on those who can deploy it skillfully in appropriate social contexts. This dissertation presents an original interdisciplinary investigation of Yoruba proverb knowledge as social capital in communities in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, integrating sociolinguistic analysis, social capital theory, and ethnographic fieldwork in a theoretically innovative research programme. The study challenges existing accounts of Yoruba proverb research that treat proverbs as static cultural texts by demonstrating that proverb knowledge is dynamically produced, evaluated, and deployed as economic, political, and social currency in specific community contexts. Using a multi-method ethnographic design combining social network analysis, proverb knowledge assessments, observation of proverb use in dispute resolution and ceremonial contexts, and interviews with community leaders and knowledge custodians across Kabba-Bunu, Ijumu, and Lokoja local government areas, the study maps the social distribution of proverb knowledge and its correlation with social position, influence, and resource access. The theoretical framework integrates Bourdieu's social and cultural capital theory with sociolinguistic politeness research and Yoruba oral literature theory. Existing research on proverbs as social capital has been theoretically proposed but not empirically tested through mixed social network and ethnographic methods. This dissertation makes an original contribution by demonstrating empirically that proverb knowledge correlates significantly with influence scores in community decision-making networks. Recommendations will address proverb knowledge documentation and cultural education policy for Yoruba communities in North Central Nigeria.
