An Original Investigation into the Theoretical Foundations of Curriculum Leadership for School Improvement in Nigerian Educational Contexts

Curriculum leadership is the dimension of educational leadership most directly connected to instructional quality and student learning, yet its theoretical foundations for the Nigerian educational context, where leadership operates within distinct cultural, structural, and resource-constrained conditions, remain under-developed. This study conducted an original theoretical and empirical investigation into curriculum leadership for school improvement in Nigerian secondary schools. A constructive theoretical methodology integrating systematic review, multi-site case research, and expert validation was employed. Systematic review of 65 curriculum leadership publications from 2018 to 2024 confirmed that existing theories were developed in Western school contexts and inadequately account for distributed authority in culturally hierarchical Nigerian schools, resource-constrained school improvement processes, examination-driven leadership priorities, and community and religious authority dimensions of school leadership. Multi-site case research was conducted at 12 secondary schools (two per geopolitical zone) identified as improving on measurable curriculum quality indicators, involving 48 in-depth interviews with school leaders, teachers, and community stakeholders. Grounded analysis generated the original Nigerian Curriculum Leadership for School Improvement Theory (NCLSI), proposing five leadership functions specific to the Nigerian context: curriculum vision articulation within community cultural norms, examination-pedagogy tension navigation, resource constraint creative management, professional learning community cultivation, and stakeholder curriculum stewardship engagement. Expert review by 22 school leadership and curriculum scholars confirmed the theory's original contribution to both curriculum leadership and Nigerian educational leadership scholarship.
