An Original Theory of Cooperative Sector Transformation Under Digital Economy Conditions in Nigeria

The digital economy is restructuring cooperative sector dynamics in Nigeria through changes in member financial behaviour, competitive pressures from fintech platforms, new organisational capabilities enabled by digital tools, and emerging models such as platform cooperatives and blockchain governance. No theoretical framework exists to systematically guide understanding of cooperative sector transformation under these conditions. This study developed an original theory of cooperative sector transformation under digital economy conditions in Nigeria. A theory-building methodology incorporating structural analysis, technological transformation literature review, and longitudinal field research was employed. Structural analysis documented the digital economy forces affecting Nigerian cooperative societies through regulatory analysis, competitive mapping of fintech-cooperative interactions, and cooperative technology adoption surveys across 150 cooperatives in Lagos, Kano, and Enugu. The transformation literature review synthesised 48 publications on technological transformation of cooperative and mutual sector organisations globally. Longitudinal field research tracked 20 cooperatives undergoing digital transformation over 36 months through quarterly interviews with managers and members. Analysis generated the Cooperative Digital Transformation Theory (CDTT), which proposes that cooperative sector transformation under digital conditions proceeds through three sequential but non-deterministic phases: digital service adoption (adopting digital platforms as service delivery channels), cooperative business model innovation (restructuring cooperative value propositions around digital capabilities), and digital cooperative emergence (creating new cooperative forms born of the digital economy). Original contributions include the concept of cooperative digital identity paradox (tension between cooperative democratic values and algorithmic efficiency demands) and a transformation readiness typology identifying four cooperative categories with differentiated digital transformation trajectories. Expert validation confirmed the theory's originality and explanatory power.
