Analysis of Gender Representation in Nollywood Films from South East Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study analyses gender representation patterns in Nollywood films produced by South East Nigerian filmmakers, examining how female characters are portrayed and what societal messages these portrayals convey. Nollywood is Africa's largest film industry and Nigeria's most powerful cultural narrative medium, with its representations of gender having significant implications for societal attitudes toward women's roles and rights. This study applies qualitative content analysis to 20 Nollywood films produced between 2020 and 2023 by South East-based production houses, selected through purposive sampling. Analysis focuses on female character types, occupational roles portrayed, relationship dynamics, narrative agency, and objectification indicators. A theoretical framework drawing on cultivation theory and gender representation theory guides the analysis. Findings reveal that female characters in the sampled films predominantly appear in domestic roles (wife, mother, housemaid) in 65 percent of films, with professional and leadership roles limited to an average of one female character per film. Romantic subordination to male characters and negative portrayals of assertive women as villainous or immoral are recurring narrative patterns. However, a growing number of films produced by female directors in the sample show significantly more nuanced female characterisation. Cultural authenticity narratives are frequently used to justify gender-limiting portrayals. The study concludes that dominant gender representation in South East Nollywood reinforces patriarchal norms. It recommends gender-sensitive production guidelines and support for female directors as priority interventions for the industry.
