Application of Dewey Decimal Classification in Special Libraries in Abuja Federal Capital Territory

This study examined the application of the Dewey Decimal Classification system in selected special libraries within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, North Central Nigeria. Special libraries, including corporate, government, and institutional libraries, often face unique challenges in applying general classification schemes to highly specialised collections. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were gathered from cataloguers and information officers in eight special libraries through structured questionnaires and interviews. Findings revealed that while the classification system was widely applied, many cataloguers supplemented it with locally developed subject headings to accommodate materials not adequately covered by standard schedules, particularly in legal, legislative, and policy domains. Inconsistencies in classification across institutions limited the interoperability of catalogues. The study recommended the development of a national special library classification supplement, the organisation of cross-institutional cataloguing workshops, and the adoption of shared cataloguing platforms to promote consistency.
