Application of Regional Anatomy Knowledge in the Performance of Colostomy Care by Stoma Nurses in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital

Stoma nursing is a specialised field requiring precise understanding of the anatomy of the large bowel, abdominal wall, and peritoneum, as well as knowledge of the vascular supply and sensory innervation of peristomal skin. Complications of colostomy construction and management, including parastomal hernia, stomal retraction, prolapse, and peristomal dermatitis, are frequently related to anatomical mispositioning or inadequate peristomal assessment. In Nigerian tertiary hospitals, where colostomy rates are high due to late presentations of colorectal cancer and trauma, the anatomical competence of stoma nurses is of direct clinical relevance. This study aims to assess the application of regional anatomy knowledge in the performance of colostomy care among stoma nurses at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, South West Nigeria. Structured knowledge assessment and direct observation of colostomy care sessions will be conducted, with performance rated against an anatomy-based competency framework. Findings will be correlated with formal anatomy training history and years of stoma nursing experience. The study anticipates producing an evidence-based anatomy competency profile for stoma nursing practice and recommendations for curriculum integration in Nigerian nursing postgraduate programmes.
