Assessment of Agricultural Machinery Maintenance Practices Among Tractor Operators in Kaduna State

This study assesses agricultural machinery maintenance practices and their effect on equipment reliability among tractor operators in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. Tractor reliability is critical for the timeliness of land preparation, planting, and harvesting operations whose delays can significantly reduce crop yields. In Kaduna State, where tractor-based mechanisation is significant, poor maintenance practices result in frequent breakdowns, high repair costs, and reduced service availability for farmers. This study uses a descriptive survey design, collecting data from 85 tractor operators and 30 repair workshop technicians in Zaria, Kachia, and Birnin Gwari local government areas. Maintenance practice dimensions assessed include preventive maintenance frequency, lubricant change intervals, filter replacement practices, operator training level, and availability of spare parts. Equipment downtime records and repair costs are documented from workshop records. Regression analysis identifies maintenance practice predictors of equipment reliability. Findings reveal that 63 percent of tractor operators conduct only corrective maintenance, with no systematic preventive maintenance schedule. Average annual downtime per tractor is 47 working days, significantly above the international benchmark of 12 days. Inadequate operator training, spare parts unavailability, and cost constraints are the primary maintenance barriers. Tractors with regular preventive maintenance show 68 percent lower repair costs annually. The study concludes that maintenance culture reform is urgently needed among Kaduna State tractor operators. It recommends operator training programmes and spare parts supply chain development.
