📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study assesses the environmental responsibility practices of large-scale brewery companies operating in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. The brewing industry generates significant volumes of wastewater, solid organic waste, and carbon dioxide emissions, and the practices of major companies in managing these impacts have implications for regulatory compliance, local environmental quality, and corporate reputational positioning. Four brewery facilities in Agege, Ikeja, and Sagamu were assessed through structured compliance audits, analysis of publicly available sustainability reports, and interviews with environmental managers at each facility. Assessment criteria covered effluent management, solid waste and by-product management, water consumption efficiency, energy use and emissions, and environmental management system certification status. Results reveal considerable variability between companies. Two multinational-affiliated breweries hold ISO 14001 certification and publish detailed annual sustainability reports showing measurable year-on-year improvements in water intensity and waste generation per hectolitre of beer produced. Two domestically owned breweries operate without formal environmental management systems, and one shows effluent quality non-compliance in three of four quarterly monitoring periods reviewed. By-product management, particularly the use of spent grain as animal feed, is well managed across all four facilities. Carbon emissions per unit output vary by a factor of 2.1 between the most and least efficient facilities. The study concludes that environmental management quality in the Lagos brewery sector is strongly correlated with corporate governance standards. Recommendations include sector-wide environmental management system adoption incentivised through regulatory licensing conditions.
