Assessment of Deworming Programme Coverage and Equity in Public Primary Schools in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria

School-based deworming programmes targeting soil-transmitted helminths are among the most cost-effective public health interventions for improving child educational outcomes in endemic settings, yet coverage equity across schools of varying accessibility and resource levels remains a persistent operational challenge. This study assesses the coverage and equity of the school-based deworming programme in public primary schools in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. A cross-sectional programme evaluation was conducted in 50 randomly selected public primary schools across Jos North, Shendam, and Riyom Local Government Areas. Data were collected through review of school deworming registers, teacher and head teacher interviews, parent recall surveys administered to caregivers of 400 children, and review of drug distribution manifests. Key equity indicators examined included coverage rates by school urbanicity, school size, proximity to health facility, and presence of disability. Evidence from 2020 to 2024 documents significant geographic inequities in Nigerian school deworming coverage, with small rural schools and those serving nomadic or displaced populations consistently underperforming. This study generates a coverage equity map and identifies specific operational gaps requiring targeted remediation. Recommendations will be submitted to the Plateau State Ministry of Education and the State NTD Control Programme for integration into annual programme reviews.
