Assessment of Elderly Health Challenges in Ogun State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The growing elderly population in Ogun State faces distinctive health and social challenges that Nigeria's health system is poorly prepared to address, and systematic assessment provides evidence for policy preparation. This study assessed health challenges and healthcare access experiences of persons aged 60 and above in Ifo, Ijebu North, and Remo North Local Government Areas, Ogun State. A cross-sectional survey of 280 elderly persons collected data on chronic disease prevalence, functional health status, healthcare utilisation, health expenditure, insurance status, and social support networks. Hypertension was the most prevalent condition (58.6 percent), followed by arthritis (34.3 percent), diabetes (22.1 percent), and visual impairment (38.9 percent). Only 12.9 percent held any health insurance. Catastrophic health expenditure was experienced by 18.2 percent. Functional dependence was reported by 33.9 percent. Recommendations include integrating geriatric care units into Ogun State General Hospitals, expanding NHIA enrolment for elderly non-formal workers, training PHC workers in geriatric assessment, community-based elder care volunteer networks, and a state Ageing-in-Place home care support pilot programme.

Strengthening social protection access and community elder care volunteer networks remains a critical policy priority for Ogun State.
