📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study assesses the effectiveness of erosion control measures implemented in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Udi is among the most severely gully-eroded areas in Nigeria, where erodible sandy soils, steep terrain, and intense seasonal rainfall create conditions for rapid gully expansion that destroys farmland, damages roads, and threatens habitation. A field inventory of twenty-two erosion control interventions implemented between 2018 and 2022 through state and federal soil conservation programmes was conducted, categorising measures as vegetative, structural, or combined. Condition assessment evaluated the structural integrity and vegetation establishment status of each measure through visual inspection, measurement, and photographic documentation. Interviews were conducted with twelve community members adjacent to each project site to assess post-implementation maintenance practices and community satisfaction. Results show that nine of twenty-two assessed interventions are performing effectively, six are partially functional, and seven have failed or been abandoned. Vegetative measures, particularly vetiver grass hedgerow plantings, show the highest success rate at 70 percent where establishment was properly managed. Gabion structures show mixed results, with failures attributed to design undersizing relative to peak flow events. The most consistent failure factor across all measure types is absence of post-installation maintenance due to unclear community responsibility. The study concludes that technical design is less important than community ownership in determining long-term effectiveness. Recommendations include mandatory maintenance plans with designated community caretakers as a condition of project approval. Keywords: erosion control, gully erosion, Enugu State, land degradation, soil conservation.
