Assessment of Erosion Gully Development and Land Degradation in Anambra State

This study assesses the extent, severity, and contributory factors of erosion gully development and associated land degradation in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Gully erosion is one of the most severe environmental problems in the South East geopolitical zone, where the naturally erodible sandy-loam soils, torrential seasonal rainfall, steep topography, and poor land management practices combine to produce rapidly expanding gully systems that destroy agricultural land, damage infrastructure, and threaten communities. Field surveys were conducted in twelve communities across Anambra East, Orumba South, and Njikoka Local Government Areas to map gully extent, measure gully dimensions, assess headcut advance rates, and inventory land use and vegetation conditions in affected catchments. Remote sensing imagery from two periods spanning five years was used to quantify gully area expansion. Results show that the aggregate gully area in the surveyed communities expanded by 34 percent over the five-year assessment period. The most active gully heads advance at rates of 3 to 8 metres per year. Deforestation and the absence of constructed storm drains in residential areas are identified as the primary triggering factors. Agricultural lands constitute the majority of directly affected land use. Economic damage from lost farmland and road infrastructure disruption is significant. The study recommends a combined engineering and vegetation approach to gully remediation, including gabion check dams, concrete apron drops at gully heads, and systematic afforestation of eroded catchments.
