Assessment of Noise Pollution from Quarry Operations on Surrounding Communities in Delta State, South South Nigeria

Quarry operations in Delta State, South South Nigeria, generate continuous and impulse noise that affects the quality of life and health of surrounding residential communities. This study assesses noise pollution levels from quarrying activities and their impact on communities in Ughelli North and Ethiope East Local Government Areas of Delta State. Environmental noise monitoring was conducted at quarry boundaries and at five community receptor points during active operational periods using a calibrated sound level meter. Noise levels were assessed against the NESREA Noise Standards and compared to World Health Organisation community noise guidelines. A community health and annoyance survey was administered to 200 residents. Results reveal that quarry boundary noise levels range from 75 to 102 decibels, well in excess of NESREA's 70-decibel industrial zone limit. At the nearest residential receptors, daytime noise levels consistently exceed 65 decibels. Community respondents report high rates of sleep disturbance, communication interference, and stress-related symptoms attributable to quarry noise. The study identifies the use of pneumatic rock drills without mufflers and uncovered vehicle loading bays as the principal point sources. Recommendations include engineering controls on the loudest equipment, installation of noise barriers, and limitation of blasting to designated daytime hours.
