Assessment of Noise Pollution Levels and Community Perception in Onitsha Industrial Zone, Anambra State

Industrial and commercial activities in Onitsha, one of Nigeria's busiest trading hubs, generate substantial noise emissions that may exceed environmental standards and affect community wellbeing. This study measured ambient noise pollution levels in and around the Onitsha Industrial Zone and assessed community perception of noise impacts. Sound pressure levels were measured at twelve sampling locations during morning peak, afternoon, and evening periods using a calibrated digital sound level meter. Measurements were compared against the Federal Environmental Protection Agency noise standards for commercial and residential areas. A structured questionnaire was administered to 180 adult residents to assess perceived noise-related annoyance, sleep disturbance, and reported health effects. Results showed that eight of twelve sampling locations exceeded the permissible noise standard for commercial zones during peak hours, with the highest levels recorded near generator-powered manufacturing units and heavy goods vehicle loading bays. Community survey findings revealed widespread annoyance, with over 65 percent of respondents reporting sleep disruption and 40 percent reporting headaches attributed to noise exposure. Perceived noise impact was significantly higher among respondents living within 200 metres of the industrial zone boundary. Recommendations include enforcing noise emission limits for industrial operators, mandating acoustic barriers around perimeter boundaries, and requiring regular noise monitoring as part of environmental compliance reporting.
