Assessment of Tele-optometry Readiness Among Optometrists in Abuja, FCT

Tele-optometry, the delivery of optometric services using information and communication technology, has gained significant attention globally as a means of extending eye care access to remote and underserved populations. This study assesses the readiness of optometrists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to adopt tele-optometry services in their practice. A cross-sectional descriptive survey will be conducted among 110 registered optometrists practicing in Abuja, using a validated structured questionnaire adapted from established digital health readiness assessment frameworks. Dimensions assessed will include awareness of tele-optometry models, existing information technology infrastructure, digital literacy, patient data management competencies, and willingness to adopt telehealth platforms. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The study anticipates that while most optometrists will be aware of tele-optometry concepts, few will have the infrastructure or structured digital workflows required for implementation. Barriers related to internet reliability, patient trust, and regulatory frameworks will also be documented. Findings will be submitted to ODORBN and the Federal Ministry of Health to inform digital health policy and support the integration of tele-optometry into Nigeria's primary eye care system. This study contributes to the emerging literature on digital health transformation in Nigerian optometry and provides a readiness benchmark for future tele-optometry implementation in the North Central zone.
