📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Termites cause substantial economic losses to agricultural infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa, with farm buildings and grain storage structures being particularly vulnerable. In Benue State, often described as Nigeria's food basket, such losses can undermine food security for smallholder farmers. This study assesses the prevalence and severity of termite infestation in farm buildings and storage structures across three local government areas in Benue State. Structured field surveys will be conducted in Makurdi, Gboko, and Oju LGAs, with infested structures identified through physical inspection for mud tubes, damaged wood, and live termite activity. Termite genera will be identified using morphological keys, and infestation severity will be rated on a standardized scale. Farmers will be interviewed to document economic losses and current control practices using a pre-tested questionnaire. Data will be analyzed descriptively, with chi-square tests used to examine associations between structure type and infestation severity. This research addresses a significant gap in documentation of termite damage to agricultural infrastructure in North Central Nigeria. Results are expected to reveal high infestation rates in earthen and timber structures and limited adoption of preventive treatments. The study will provide actionable recommendations for termite-resistant construction practices and affordable chemical control options. Findings will be disseminated to agricultural extension agents operating in Benue State. Keywords: termite infestation, farm structures, Benue State, grain storage, pest management
