Assessment of the Impact of Girl-Child Education Programmes on Community Development in Niger State

Investment in girl-child education generates wide-ranging social and economic dividends that extend beyond the individual to transform communities and economies. This study assesses the impact of targeted girl-child education programmes on community development outcomes in Niger State, focusing on programmes implemented between 2019 and 2024 in Kontagora, Minna, and Bida Local Government Areas. A mixed-method design was adopted, with 220 female programme beneficiaries, 50 community leaders, and 30 programme coordinators forming the study sample. Structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used for data collection, with analysis conducted using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings indicate that communities with sustained girl-child education interventions demonstrate higher rates of female secondary school completion, lower rates of early marriage, improved maternal health indicators, and increased female participation in community decision-making. Beneficiaries report higher economic productivity and stronger social agency compared to non-beneficiary peers. Programme sustainability challenges including inadequate funding, high facilitator turnover, and community resistance in some areas limit long-term impact. Recommendations include government co-investment in girl-child education programmes, structured community ownership models, and integration of girl empowerment metrics into state development reporting. This research contributes to the evidence base on educational gender intervention outcomes in North Central Nigeria.
