Attitude of Secondary School Students Towards Use of Library in Sokoto Metropolis

This study investigated the attitudes of secondary school students towards library use in Sokoto Metropolis, Sokoto State, North West Nigeria. Student attitudes towards the library are a critical determinant of how frequently and productively the library is consulted as a learning resource. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 350 senior secondary students in fifteen schools using a Likert-scale attitude questionnaire. Findings revealed that the majority of students held neutral to negative attitudes towards the school library, viewing it primarily as a quiet place for study rather than as a dynamic resource centre. Students attributed their low library use to limited opening hours, the absence of recreational reading materials, lack of trained librarians, and the perception that the library contained nothing they could not find on their phones. The study recommended that school administrators improve library opening hours, stock libraries with engaging fiction and current non-fiction, appoint qualified librarians, and implement regular library awareness activities to shift student perceptions.
