Awareness and Knowledge of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Nursing Students at Bayero University Kano

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Nursing students are exposed to occupational blood and body fluid hazards during clinical training, yet knowledge of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) protocols among this population is inconsistently documented in Nigerian studies. Aim: This study assessed awareness and knowledge of PEP among nursing students at Bayero University Kano, North West Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 140 clinical-year nursing students using total population sampling. A structured self-administered questionnaire assessed PEP awareness, knowledge, and perceived confidence in using PEP protocols. SPSS version 26 was used for data analysis. Results: Eighty-one percent of students were aware of PEP; however, only 47% demonstrated adequate knowledge of the 72-hour initiation window and correct reporting procedures. Prior exposure incidents were reported by 28% of students, of whom only 38% had completed a full PEP course. Conclusion: Despite high awareness, critical knowledge gaps in PEP protocol adherence remain. Nursing schools and teaching hospitals must integrate PEP education into pre-clinical orientation, provide accessible reporting pathways, and maintain PEP starter packs in clinical areas. Keywords: post-exposure prophylaxis, HIV, nursing students, Kano, occupational exposure.
