Awareness and Use of Emergency Contraception among Female Undergraduates in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, North West Nigeria

Background: Emergency contraception (EC) plays a vital role in preventing unintended pregnancies when used correctly. Despite its availability in Nigerian pharmacies, awareness and correct use among young women in northern Nigerian universities remain inadequately studied. This study assessed EC awareness, attitudes, and use among female undergraduates at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 300 randomly selected female undergraduates across six faculties. The questionnaire covered knowledge of EC types, correct timing of use, attitudinal dispositions, and previous use. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results: Awareness of emergency contraception was found in 61 percent of respondents, though only 38 percent correctly identified the 72-hour window for standard EC use. Previous use was reported by 29 percent of sexually active participants. Levonorgestrel-based pills were the most recognised form. Religious and cultural beliefs were the most cited barriers to use among non-users. Conclusion: Awareness of EC is moderate at Ahmadu Bello University but is accompanied by significant knowledge gaps on correct usage. Targeted sexual and reproductive health education programmes on campus are essential to reduce unintended pregnancies.
