Awareness of Life Insurance Products Among Secondary School Teachers in Akwa Ibom State

This study evaluates the level of awareness of life insurance products among secondary school teachers in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria. Secondary school teachers constitute a sizable segment of the state's formal sector workforce, yet evidence from insurance market data suggests that life insurance ownership among this group is significantly lower than might be expected given their employment stability and regular income. Understanding awareness levels and the factors that mediate conversion from awareness to policy ownership is essential for market development efforts. This research employs a descriptive survey design involving 350 teachers drawn through stratified sampling from public and private secondary schools across three senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom State. Structured questionnaires assess awareness of specific product types (term life, whole life, endowment), sources of insurance information, attitudes toward life insurance, and current ownership status. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests examine associations between demographic variables and awareness levels. Preliminary findings are expected to indicate moderate awareness with limited product differentiation knowledge, and that most teachers rely on oral word-of-mouth rather than formal channels for insurance information. The study recommends employer-partnered life insurance education initiatives and simplified product explanatory materials distributed through teachers' unions.
