📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterised by compromised bone strength that significantly increases fracture risk, particularly in postmenopausal women. Despite its high global prevalence, awareness remains low in many Nigerian communities, contributing to delayed diagnosis and preventable fracture morbidity. This descriptive cross-sectional survey examines the level of awareness, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding osteoporosis among postmenopausal women attending primary health centres in Abeokuta, Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A structured questionnaire will be administered to 250 consenting women aged 45 years and above. Domains assessed will include knowledge of osteoporosis definition, risk factors, dietary calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity habits, and utilisation of bone mineral density screening services. Associations between educational level, socioeconomic status, and osteoporosis awareness will be analysed using chi-square and logistic regression. Findings are expected to reveal significant awareness gaps, particularly regarding dietary and lifestyle preventive measures. The study will provide evidence to support the design of targeted bone health education programmes for women in Ogun State. Collaboration with the National Orthopaedic Hospital and local government health departments is proposed for programme delivery. This work contributes to efforts to reduce the incidence of fragility fractures and their associated healthcare burden across the South West zone and the broader Nigerian population. Keywords: osteoporosis, postmenopausal women, bone health awareness, Abeokuta, fragility fractures.
