Bioethical Dimensions of Health Education Research Practice in Nigeria: Toward a Culturally Grounded Ethics Framework

Bioethical frameworks governing health education research in Nigeria are largely derived from Western traditions that may not adequately reflect Nigerian cultural values, community ethical norms, and the specific contexts of health education research in low-resource settings. This study explored the bioethical dimensions of health education research practice in Nigeria and developed a culturally grounded ethics framework through an original philosophical and empirical inquiry. A three-phase methodology was employed: a critical review of 72 published health education research ethics documents and empirical studies from Nigeria, ethnophilosophical analysis of Ubuntu and Igbo Omenala ethical traditions in relation to research ethics, and a Delphi consensus study with 36 Nigerian health education researchers, bioethicists, and community representatives across the six geopolitical zones. Synthesis of findings identified five culturally grounded ethical principles for health education research: communal accountability, reciprocal benefit, relational respect, epistemological humility, and contextual justice. These principles expanded upon but did not contradict existing bioethical requirements. The proposed Nigeria-Grounded Health Education Research Ethics Framework was positively endorsed by all Delphi panel members in the final round. The study makes a significant original contribution to African bioethics and Nigerian health education research methodology.
