Body Composition Analysis and Physical Activity Levels Among Office Workers in Federal Secretariat Abuja, North Central Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Sedentary occupational behaviour is a growing contributor to metabolic disease in Nigerian urban centres. Federal civil servants represent a large, relatively homogeneous occupational group whose physical activity levels and body composition characteristics have been inadequately characterised in recent literature. Objectives: This study seeks to assess body composition parameters, including body fat percentage, lean mass, and visceral fat rating, alongside self-reported physical activity levels, among office workers at the Federal Secretariat Abuja. Methods: One hundred and eighty civil servants aged 25 to 55 years will be recruited by purposive sampling. Body composition will be assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis with an Omron full-body scanner. Physical activity will be evaluated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation will assess the relationship between physical activity and body composition indices. Expected Outcomes: The majority of participants are anticipated to be classified as insufficiently active, with sedentary categories correlating significantly with elevated body fat percentage and visceral fat rating. Conclusion: Findings will guide workplace wellness programmes targeting physical activity promotion in Nigerian federal civil service institutions. Keywords: body composition, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, office workers, Abuja.
