Brand Identity Design for Traditional Herbal Medicine Practitioners in Oyo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Traditional herbal medicine practitioners represent a significant component of the informal healthcare system in Oyo State, South West Nigeria, serving millions of patients who either cannot access or prefer alternatives to orthodox medical facilities. Despite the breadth and depth of their knowledge, most practitioners operate without coherent brand identities, limiting their credibility, market reach, and ability to command fair pricing for their products and services. This project applies graphic and industrial design principles to the development of brand identity packages for six selected traditional medicine practitioners in Ibadan and Ogbomoso. A co-design process involving structured brand discovery workshops elicited each practitioner's practice philosophy, target clientele, and product range. Brand identity deliverables produced include logo systems, colour palettes, label designs for herbal preparations, consultation space signage, and promotional flyers. Visual language incorporates elements drawn from Yoruba botanical illustration traditions and contemporary healthcare aesthetics. Consumer perception evaluations involving sixty potential clients assessed the impact of rebranding on perceived trustworthiness, product safety, and willingness to pay. Results demonstrate a forty-four percent increase in perceived product safety and a thirty-eight percent increase in stated willingness to pay a premium after rebranding. The project recommends that the Oyo State Traditional Medicine Board incorporate brand development support into its practitioner registration programme.
