Building a Digital Payment System for a Cooperative Society in Akwa Ibom State

Cooperative societies in Akwa Ibom State manage significant financial transactions manually, increasing the risk of errors, delayed processing, and member disputes over contribution records. This study describes the development of a digital payment and contribution management system for a cooperative society in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria. The system was developed using PHP and MySQL, with a mobile-friendly web interface. Members can log contributions, request loans, view repayment schedules, and receive push notifications for due payments. An administrative panel allows treasurers to record cash payments, approve loans, and generate financial statements. Integration with a local Nigerian payment gateway (Paystack) enables direct online payment via debit card and bank transfer. Development used Rapid Application Development, with two prototype iterations involving five cooperative administrators and 30 member volunteers. Functional testing validated all 85 test cases covering contribution posting, loan disbursement, interest calculation, and report generation. A three-month pilot involving 218 active members processed 1,420 financial transactions with zero computation errors reported. Transaction reconciliation time decreased from an estimated three hours per meeting to under 30 minutes. Member satisfaction with the system was rated 4.4 out of 5.0. The study concludes that digital cooperative management systems significantly improve financial accountability in community-based savings groups in South South Nigeria.
