Cardiovascular Physiological Profiling and Fitness Certification Standards for Officers in the Nigeria Immigration Service: A Cross-Sectional Study in Kano State

Background: Immigration officers perform physically demanding border enforcement duties requiring adequate cardiovascular fitness. Current fitness certification requirements for the Nigeria Immigration Service lack evidence-based physiological grounding. Characterising the actual cardiovascular fitness profiles of serving officers and comparing them with established law enforcement fitness benchmarks is necessary for policy development. Objectives: This study aims to assess cardiorespiratory fitness by VO2 max estimation, resting and exercise blood pressure, lipid profiles, and body composition among Nigeria Immigration Service officers in Kano State and to determine the proportion meeting proposed minimum fitness standards for law enforcement personnel. Methods: Eighty male and twenty female immigration officers will be recruited. Cardiorespiratory fitness will be estimated by the Chester step test. Body composition will be assessed by bioelectrical impedance. Fasting blood will be drawn for lipid profile analysis. Blood pressure will be measured pre- and post-step test. Descriptive statistics will characterise the fitness distribution and logistic regression will identify predictors of fitness standard failure. Expected Outcomes: A significant proportion of officers, particularly those with more than ten years of service, are anticipated to fall below minimum fitness benchmarks, with dyslipidaemia and obesity being the most prevalent modifiable risk factors. Conclusion: Findings will provide evidence for reforming fitness assessment and periodic health monitoring in the Nigeria Immigration Service.
