Challenges of Implementing the New Senior Secondary School Business Education Curriculum in Borno State

📖 VIEW PROJECT ABSTRACT

This study examined the challenges of implementing the new Senior Secondary School Business Education curriculum in Borno State, North East Nigeria. The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council has periodically revised the Business Education curriculum to align with emerging economic realities. However, the success of these revisions depends heavily on implementation at the school level, where factors such as teacher preparedness, resource availability, and administrative support play critical roles. In Borno State, where education has been severely disrupted by insurgency, these challenges are particularly acute. A descriptive survey design was employed. The population comprised 210 Business Education teachers across 30 public senior secondary schools in three local government areas in Borno State. A purposive sample of 105 teachers was selected to ensure representation from diverse school contexts. A validated implementation challenges questionnaire comprising 40 items was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores. The findings reveal that lack of teacher orientation on the revised curriculum, shortage of recommended textbooks, damaged school facilities, and irregular school attendance due to security concerns are the dominant implementation challenges. The study recommends emergency curriculum orientation workshops for all Business Education teachers in Borno State, alongside resource provisioning through the North East Development Commission.
