Challenges of Teaching Business Education in Rural Secondary Schools in Zamfara State

This study investigated the challenges of teaching Business Education in rural secondary schools in Zamfara State, North West Nigeria. Rural education in Nigeria faces a distinct set of obstacles that differ markedly from urban school challenges. In Zamfara State, security concerns, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers have compounded the difficulties of delivering quality Business Education. Understanding these challenges is critical for informing policy decisions aimed at improving educational outcomes in underserved communities. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised 180 Business Education teachers in rural senior secondary schools across five local government areas in Zamfara State. Ninety teachers were selected using purposive sampling to ensure the rural school context was accurately represented. A validated questionnaire consisting of 35 items was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores. The findings reveal that the most critical challenges include lack of qualified Business Education teachers, absence of functional teaching aids, poor road networks limiting access to schools, and student absenteeism linked to security concerns. The study recommends that the Zamfara State Government should implement targeted recruitment and incentive programmes to attract qualified Business Education graduates to rural postings and collaborate with the Universal Basic Education Commission to provide emergency infrastructure support.
