Child Neglect and Its Consequences in Single-Parent Families in Calabar, Cross River State

Single-parent families, particularly those headed by women in low-income communities, are disproportionately exposed to the risk of child neglect due to economic pressures and limited social support. This study examines the nature and consequences of child neglect in single-parent families in Calabar, Cross River State, South South Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey approach, 90 single parents and social workers from government welfare offices and NGOs in Calabar Municipal and Calabar South are surveyed with structured questionnaires. Data are analysed using frequencies, percentages, and simple correlations. The study finds that financial deprivation, depression, and social stigma associated with single parenthood significantly heighten the risk of child neglect, manifesting as inadequate nutrition, poor school attendance, lack of medical care, and emotional unavailability. Children from neglected home environments also show higher rates of behavioural problems and association with street gangs. Social work services for single-parent families in Calabar are described as fragmented, underfunded, and inaccessible to the poorest households. Recommendations include establishing community-based family support centres staffed by professional social workers, strengthening the implementation of the Child Rights Law in Cross River State, and introducing income supplementation programmes targeting single mothers with dependent children.
