Collection Development Practices in Secondary School Libraries in Kano Municipal Area

This study investigated collection development practices in secondary school libraries within the Kano Municipal Area of Kano State, North West Nigeria. Effective collection development is central to the ability of school libraries to support the curriculum and foster a reading culture among students. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from school librarians and library teachers in twenty secondary schools through structured questionnaires and observation. Findings revealed that the majority of schools lacked formal collection development policies, and acquisitions were driven primarily by donations rather than systematic selection criteria aligned with the curriculum. Many schools also reported a heavy reliance on outdated textbooks and insufficient fiction for recreational reading. Budget allocations for library acquisitions were minimal and irregular. The study recommended that the Kano State Ministry of Education mandate collection development policies for all secondary school libraries, allocate dedicated funds for library acquisitions, and train school librarians in systematic collection building.
