Community Education and Social Movement Learning in Indigenous Rights Struggles in the Niger Delta

This study examines community education and social movement learning in the context of indigenous rights struggles in the Niger Delta, contributing to the underexplored intersection of social movement studies, radical adult education, and post-colonial theory in the African context. Social movement learning theory, which examines how collective action and movement participation itself constitutes a form of powerful political education, has been developed primarily from South American and North American social movement contexts. The Niger Delta's long history of community resistance to oil industry impacts provides a rich empirical site for examining social movement learning in an African oil-producing region. This study uses an oral history and participatory ethnographic methodology, conducting life history interviews with 55 community activists, women leaders, and youth movement members in Ogoniland, Ijaw communities, and Urhobo communities across Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta States, supplemented by analysis of movement publications, community education materials, and organisational documents from 1990 to 2023. Social movement learning is examined across dimensions of critical consciousness development, political knowledge acquisition, collective identity formation, and transformative action capacity. Findings reveal distinctive forms of social movement learning including ecological witness, intergenerational rights transmission, and counter-knowledge production through community documentation of environmental harm. Women's movement participation is shown to produce particularly powerful transformative learning trajectories. The study contributes an original Niger Delta Social Movement Learning Model and recommends formal recognition of movement learning contributions in Nigeria's non-formal education recognition and accreditation framework.
