Comparative Analysis of Defensive Architecture at Yoruba Town Walls in South West Nigeria

Defensive architecture in the form of earthen and stone walls, ditches, and gate complexes is a prominent and spatially extensive element of the pre-colonial Yoruba urban landscape, yet systematic comparative analysis of these features across the South West zone using consistent architectural and spatial analytical criteria has not been undertaken. This study presents a comparative analysis of defensive architecture at seven Yoruba town wall complexes in Oyo, Osun, Ogun, and Ekiti states, using a consistent recording methodology encompassing photogrammetric survey, architectural measurement, GIS-based spatial analysis, and historical source cross-referencing. Wall complexes were evaluated across eleven comparative parameters including total enclosed area, wall height and thickness, ditch dimensions, gate complexity, and spatial relationship to water sources and road networks. Statistical cluster analysis identifies three distinct defensive architecture traditions within the comparative sample, tentatively associated with different periods and socio-political contexts of construction. The Ijebu Eredo complex stands apart from all others in its scale and engineering ambition, while a cluster of smaller Ekiti wall systems shows internally consistent characteristics suggesting shared design conventions or architectural knowledge transmission between allied communities. Historical correlation of architectural parameters with documentary accounts of warfare and political alliance provides a chronological anchor for the typological sequence. The study argues that Yoruba defensive architecture constitutes a major data source for political history that has been significantly underutilized due to the absence of standardized comparative methodology.
