📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Onion (Allium cepa) is the most economically important bulb vegetable in Nigeria, with production concentrated in the Sahel and Guinea Savanna zones, including Plateau State. Distinguishing between varieties suited for fresh market consumption and those destined for processing into dried flakes, powder, or condiments is critical for guiding farmer variety selection and market channel decisions. This study conducts a comparative analysis of three fresh market varieties (Ex-gidankoli, Bawado, and Dan-burum) and two processing varieties (Red Creole and Hybrid Platinum) for yield, bulb quality, dry matter content, and postharvest storability in Jos, Plateau State. A field trial was established using a randomized complete block design with five treatments and four replications during the dry season. Agronomic data, laboratory dry matter analysis, and a 60-day storage trial were conducted. Results indicate that fresh market variety Ex-gidankoli produced the highest fresh bulb yield, while Red Creole demonstrated superior dry matter content and storability, making it more appropriate for processing. The study provides agronomic and quality data to guide targeted variety recommendations for fresh market farmers and processing enterprises in Plateau State. Keywords: onion, Allium cepa, variety comparison, fresh market, Plateau State
