The transition from traditional paper-based measurement to computerised takeoff systems has altered quantity surveying practice globally, yet the pace of adoption varies across Nigerian cities. This study comparatively analyses traditional and computerised measurement techniques among quantity surveying firms in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. A survey design was employed, with 90 respondents including senior quantity surveyors, estimators, and graduate surveyors from 30 registered firms. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analysed using percentage scores and chi-square tests. The study finds that approximately 58% of firms still rely primarily on manual measurement methods, citing high software acquisition costs, inadequate training, and client resistance as barriers to computerisation. Firms that have adopted digital takeoff tools report significant reductions in measurement time, error rates, and document turnaround. The study further reveals that computerised systems enhance collaboration between design teams and improve accuracy in complex reinforced concrete structures. Recommendations include subsidising software licences through professional bodies, integrating digital measurement tools into undergraduate curricula, and offering continuing professional development programmes for practising surveyors. The study urges firms in Port Harcourt to leverage available cloud-based takeoff platforms that require minimal hardware investment. Bridging this technology gap is essential for the competitiveness of Nigerian quantity surveying firms in an increasingly digitalised global construction market.
