Competitive Dynamics and Strategic Response Patterns of Firms in the Nigerian Cement Industry

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines competitive dynamics within the Nigerian cement industry and the strategic response patterns of major market participants. The industry has witnessed significant competitive escalation over the past five years following the entry of new producers and increased import competition. Dynamic capabilities theory and competitive dynamics theory provide the conceptual framework. The research employs a mixed methods design combining longitudinal analysis of strategic announcements and market share data from five major cement producers with in-depth interviews of strategy executives. Secondary data were extracted from investor presentations, industry reports, and business press coverage spanning 2019 to 2024. Competitive action repertoires were coded and analyzed using content analysis, and market share trajectories were examined using trend analysis. Findings indicate that the Nigerian cement market displays characteristic competitive dynamics consistent with rivalry escalation theory, with leading firms responding to competitor capacity expansions within an average of eight months through matching price adjustments, distribution channel intensification, and product line extensions. The study identifies market signaling through announced capacity investments as a dominant competitive behavior among market leaders. The research concludes that Nigerian cement firms must develop sophisticated competitive response capabilities, including competitive action monitoring systems and pre-planned response protocols, to maintain strategic advantage amid intensifying rivalry.
