Computerized Accounting Systems and Financial Control in Microfinance Banks in Enugu State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between the adoption of computerized accounting systems and financial control effectiveness in microfinance banks in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Microfinance institutions play a critical role in expanding financial access to low-income earners and small business operators in Nigeria. However, financial mismanagement and weak internal controls have led to the distress and collapse of numerous microfinance banks. This study uses a survey design and collects data from 88 accounting and operations staff in 12 licensed microfinance banks operating in Enugu and Nsukka. The study measures system adoption levels, data processing accuracy, access controls, and reconciliation frequency using a structured questionnaire. Financial control effectiveness is assessed through audit outcomes, error rates, and reporting timeliness. Pearson correlation and regression analysis are employed. Findings show that the adoption of computerized accounting systems is significantly associated with improved financial control outcomes, including lower error rates, faster reconciliation, and more timely financial reporting. Access control features were particularly important in preventing unauthorized transactions. Challenges identified include inadequate IT infrastructure, insufficient training, and high software maintenance costs. The study concludes that digital accounting systems are indispensable for strengthening financial controls in microfinance institutions. It recommends that the Central Bank of Nigeria include minimum IT standards in its microfinance regulatory framework and incentivize affordable software adoption among smaller institutions.
