Conflict-Sensitive Journalism and Its Role in Peacebuilding in Northwest Nigeria

This study examines the practice of conflict-sensitive journalism and its contribution to peacebuilding in Northwest Nigeria, with particular reference to Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. The media plays a dual role in conflict contexts, potentially either inflaming tensions through sensational or biased reporting or contributing to de-escalation through responsible, peace-oriented journalism practices. The Northwest zone has experienced heightened insecurity, and the media's role in shaping public perceptions of these conflicts has significant implications for peacebuilding. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 30 journalists from print, broadcast, and online platforms, supplemented by content analysis of 90 news items covering conflict events published between January 2023 and December 2024. The theoretical framework draws from media framing theory and the peace journalism model. Findings reveal that while awareness of conflict-sensitive journalism principles is growing among Northwest journalists, structural pressures including media ownership influence, low remuneration, and inadequate training inhibit consistent application of peace-oriented reporting standards. Sensational conflict framing remains prevalent in coverage of banditry and communal violence. Recommendations include establishing a Northwest regional journalists' peace reporting training programme, developing editorial codes of conduct for conflict coverage, and creating a peer review platform for journalists committed to responsible conflict reporting.
