Continuing Professional Development and Job Effectiveness of Librarians in Federal Colleges of Education in North East Nigeria

This study examined the relationship between participation in continuing professional development activities and the job effectiveness of librarians in federal colleges of education in North East Nigeria. Continuing professional development is a cornerstone of sustained professional competence, enabling librarians to remain current with evolving information technologies, cataloguing standards, and user service expectations. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered from 55 professional librarians in four federal colleges of education across Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe States through structured questionnaires. Findings revealed that most librarians had participated in fewer than two professional development activities within the preceding three years, and that participation was largely self-funded rather than institutionally supported. Librarians who had attended professional development events reported measurable improvements in specific job performance areas including cataloguing accuracy, database search instruction, and user engagement skills. The study recommended that college management establish dedicated continuing professional development budgets, encourage association membership, and make attendance at annual NLA conferences a routine institutional obligation.
