Coordinating Yoruba Language Outreach Programmes in Diaspora Communities: A Management Perspective

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Coordinating language outreach programmes across geographically dispersed diaspora communities requires both cultural competence and sophisticated programme management capabilities. This study examines the coordination of Yoruba language outreach programmes for diaspora communities in the United States, specifically in Atlanta, Georgia and Houston, Texas, from a programme management perspective. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from Yoruba community association programme coordinators, volunteer language instructors, and diaspora cultural organisations through video-based interviews and programme document analysis. The study applies programme coordination theory, community organisation management, and diaspora engagement frameworks to evaluate how language outreach programmes are planned, staffed, resourced, and sustained. Existing literature on Yoruba diaspora language activities has focused on sociolinguistic outcomes rather than on the organisational and management dimensions of programme coordination. This study addresses that professional practice gap. The research examines how coordinators manage volunteer labour, secure community funding, maintain programme quality, and sustain learner engagement across programmes that operate without formal institutional support structures. Findings are expected to reveal that the most sustainable programmes combine strong community association governance with digital communication tools and flexible scheduling designed for diaspora family contexts. Recommendations will address a coordination guide for Yoruba diaspora language programme managers applicable to community organisations across North American cities. Keywords: programme coordination, Yoruba diaspora, language outreach, diaspora management, community organisation.
