Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development in Anambra State: The Role of Selected Multinational Companies

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has evolved from a philanthropic afterthought into a strategic business imperative, with increasing recognition that corporate activities must generate shared value for both shareholders and host communities. This study examines the relationship between CSR practices and community development outcomes in Anambra State, focusing on selected multinational companies operating within the state. The study is anchored on the Stakeholder Theory proposed by Edward Freeman, which contends that corporations are accountable not only to shareholders but to all stakeholders whose interests are affected by corporate decisions. A descriptive survey research design was employed. The population comprised community leaders, residents, and employees within the operational communities of five selected multinational firms in Awka and Onitsha. A sample of 176 respondents was drawn through purposive and stratified random sampling. Data were collected via structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Findings indicate that CSR investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development generate statistically significant and measurable improvements in community welfare indices. The study further reveals that community perception of CSR authenticity moderates the strength of the development impact, with communities that perceive CSR as voluntary and community-driven reporting higher developmental outcomes than those receiving compliance-driven initiatives. It is concluded that CSR aligned with genuine community needs accelerates sustainable development and enhances corporate social licence to operate. The study recommends that multinational companies adopt participatory needs assessments before designing CSR programmes to ensure relevance and maximise developmental impact.
