Corporate Social Responsibility Practices of Multinational Oil Companies and Community Development in Rivers State

This study examines the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of multinational oil companies and their contribution to community development in Rivers State, Nigeria. The Niger Delta region has long been at the centre of debates concerning the social obligations of international oil corporations operating in resource-rich but economically deprived communities. Using a descriptive survey design, primary data were gathered from 150 respondents across three host communities in Obio-Akpor and Ikwerre local government areas through structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. The study evaluates CSR interventions in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental remediation, assessing the extent to which these initiatives align with community needs and development priorities. Secondary data from published CSR reports of selected oil majors operating in the region are also analysed. The theoretical framework draws on stakeholder theory and the social contract theory of business. Findings are expected to reveal that while CSR expenditures are substantial, community members perceive a significant gap between corporate promises and actual development outcomes, particularly in environmental restoration. The study recommends participatory CSR planning models that involve host communities in project identification, implementation, and monitoring. It further advocates for stronger regulatory enforcement of CSR obligations through the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. This research provides practical insights for multinational managers, community leaders, and regulators seeking to improve the developmental impact of oil company CSR programmes.
